To quote a popular saying at TNC, "you'll join for the mission, and you'll stay for the people."WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHERThe Grand Calumet River Assistant Crew Leader assists in restoring and maintaining preserve areas and riverine marshes as part of a Grand Calumet River Restoration Action Team. They will assist the Crew Leaders in training and leading the team as they control exotic invasive species; monitor wildlife; conduct preserve maintenance; and prepare sites for prescribed burns. The Assistant Crew Leader will help maintain restoration records using a database, PC, and/or tablet; ensure safe use and maintenance of tools and equipment; and may assist with volunteer and community events.Responsibilities & Scope: May assist with developing daily work plans and directing preserve work groups, including staff and volunteers. Teamwork within TNC and across partner organizations; interact with diverse groups in a respectful and professional manner. May work under close or infrequent supervision and make day to day decisions as delegated by supervisor. Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain. Irregular work hours and long days, particularly during spring and fall fire seasons. May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain. This is a full-time (40 hours/week), hands-on, field position based at our Southern Lake Michigan Rim Office in Merrillville, Indiana, lasting until October 2025.WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOUThe Nature Conservancy in Indiana is looking for a Grand Calumet River Assistant Crew Leader to join us in protecting more than 500 acres, including globally rare dune and swale habitat, across northern Lake County, Indiana. Situated within an urban industrial area on the outskirts of Chicago, TNC works with partners to restore and maintain natural areas that add to the quality of life for the local community. If you are a hard-working, nature enthusiast who enjoys working within a team, come join us today and help make a difference with the world's leading conservation organization!WHAT YOU'LL BRING Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED; and 1 years' training or experience in related field. Experience recognizing Northwest Indiana plants/community types. Experience working in a team environment; and leading a team or group of volunteers. Experience performing physical work and ability to carry a 35-pound backpack sprayer. Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. lawn mower, chainsaw, brush cutter, etc.). Able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application, etc.). Desired Qualifications 1 -2 years' experience in land management, natural systems, or related field. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges.
