Job Summary : The central sterile processing technician coordinates and collaborates the overall cleaning, decontamination, disinfection and/or sterilization of surgical instruments, trays, packs, reusable medical devices according to established standards and procedures to ensure sterile and functioning surgical instruments and supplies needed for daily surgical procedures in surgery and related departments. Major Responsibilities / Duties / Critical Tasks: Responsible for control of all parts of the sterilization process: Decontamination, prep and pack, sterilization, documentation of sterilization procedures on surgical instruments, devices and medical supplies. Follows proper Standard Precautions while in decontamination and sterilization areas. Monitor surgical schedule daily, identifying general, specific and potential needs for all cases. Assists in maintaining inventory levels in sterile processing and surgical supply storage area. Operates sterilization equipment and products using manufactory recommendations, OSHA safety guidelines and hospital recommended guidelines and policies and procedures Maintains a clean work area and able to perform simple maintenance on equipment (clean drains, change filters and clean departmental equipment....) Assists with maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives and quality improvement, safety, and environmental and infection control standards. Accountable for the identification and reduction of unsafe practices that could cause harm to patients. Monitor and maintain appropriate records to remain compliant with applicable regulatory agencies, as well as reporting occurrences immediately to supervisors. Maintain strong working / collaborative relationship with other departments to ensure flow and continuity of service. Attend in-services, presentation and continue education task to insure current practices and to maintain a higher level of quality performance related to central sterile standards. Responsible for maintaining impeccable regulatory compliance. Other duties, as assigned. Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies: Knowledge of different types of surgical instrument and materials and how to choose the appropriate method of sterilization. Knowledge of operation of sterile processing equipment and ability to trouble shoot issues. (Washers, sterilizers ....) Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and to prioritize scheduling of work. Ability to work as a team member and follow instructions from team leaders, ability to work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude. Ability to maintain confidentiality of all medical, financial, and legal information. Ability to complete work assignments accurately and in a timely manner. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or other in a professional manner. Medical terminology. Medical terminology. Required Education / Experience: High School graduate or equivalent. Completion of a sterile processing training program preferred. Twelve (12) months of full-time sterile processing experience. Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) preferred at hire and required as soon as eligibility met.
